Walla Onions
Is there a secret to growing very large onions?
I was at the State Fair and some of the Walla Walla onions where 6 to 8 inches across! Mine never get over 3 to 4 inches, and suggestions?
To grow really large onions you need light sandy soil. If you have heavy clay onions will never get very large. Most people who grow for the State Fair use heavy doses of chemical fertilizer to make their veggies abnormally large. Those onions you saw were probably on what amounted to plant steroids. Walla Walla onions are of the Granex type like the Southern Vidalia and other sweet onions. They don't really get super large normally. About 3-4 inches is what you should go for. Taste is the most important thing.
