Soil Moist Timed
Cut Your Watering Time In Half For Container Gardens
Watering garden pots is often sustained and time consuming. Nonetheless with a little planning when you pot upyour garden container, you can cut your watering time significantly.
If you are planting a hanging basket, line it with supamoss rather than sphagnum moss. This is a product made of dyed recycled cotton fibers. This lining is pre-punched with needle holes to allow water to drain from it while still preserving the majority of the water for the plants. It is straightforward to make holes in this material for easy planting and isn't unappealing.
If you're using sphagnum moss or a coconut fiber liner, place a plastic liner made from a green trash bag inside the container. Cut slits to make allowance for drainage and plant your pot as normal. Using this strategy, you'll find your basket holds moisture for a longer time period.
Another method of saving water in your hanging baskets is to put a saucer in the bottom of your planter before adding the soil. This will collect water and keep it available for the roots of your plants.
Self-watering pots are available at garden and nursery centres. These pots have a water reservoir that may hold up to several quarts of water which is steadily drawn up into the soil. These are a great solution if you love container gardening but also have to be away from home several days at a time. Check here for more hints on watering container plants while on vacation .
Many gardeners rely on moisture saving crystals, while others swear at them. The first group feel the timed release action of the crystals keeps the pot soil moist longer, thereby extending the time between waterings. The latter feel the crystals absorb all of the water and keeps it from the plant roots. This is an argument I'm not going to win no matter what side I am taking, so you'll need to test this on your own and see how this technique works for you.
