Rose Bush Care Tips
Roses can be one of the simplest of plants and provide the most beauty to a garden. There is a full collection of roses to decide upon. There are three main things to keep in mind when it comes to rose bush care. First, is rose bush choice, second, is how much water and fertilizer, and finally, apprpriate pruning. Purchasing a good book like the Ultimate Book of Roses is nice to have at your fingertips for quick referencing. It has beautiful pictures on the different rose varieties and how to care for them.
The type of rose bush you select is of utmost importance. For successfull rose bush gardening choose one that will thrive in your location. Disease and fungus can plague some roses so it is best to steer clear of those varieties. You may want to look into the hardier roses for best results. When planting your rose bush give it plenty of space to grow, generally, 3 feet around is a good rule of thumb. Pick an area for them where they will recieve at least 5 hours of sun a day.
A main consideration is watering and feeding for ultimate rose bush care. An early morning soaking at the root base is the best prescription for ultimate bloom potential. When a rose bush has just been planted it is advisable to water it everyday for the first two weeks. After that a good soaking once a week should be sufficient unless the weather is extremely hot and dry. For best results, you should mulch around each bush with bark or compost to keep the soil moistened.
Feed and fertilize once a month from Spring through the first frost in the Fall. Roses should receive rose food that has a blend of manure and fish emulsion. It is adamant to stop fertilizing your roses during the winter months.
For the best rose bush care proper pruning is vital. Just prune off the dead flowers or limbs. To boost growth and blooms, count up from the branch three nodes (the small reddish growth lines) and cut there. In January or February they should be cut down to two feet to encourage fresh lush growth in the spring.
