Low Maintenance Flower Garden All Year
There are not very many things in the world which come close in magnificence to a flower garden bursting with colorful blooms Despite what you might think, you don't really have to spend considerable time to have a gorgeous garden. A lot of perennials and bulbs usually naturalize, meaning they grow a lot like wildflowers after you've planted them. Many also require very little other than watering during the summer time, especially if you reside in a dry area.
During the winter, most of us ache for sunlight and fresh flowers, so the very first blooms after the winter are generally a sight we excitedly count on. Even before the sun appears, there are several bulbs that start to blossom. Snowdrops and crocus with their vivid flowers, grape hyacinths, daffodils, and early tulips show up around winter's last snow, while anemones, large hyacinths, and late tulips blossom from mid to late spring.
The perennials appear in the garden at the end of spring and early part of the summer months. Daylilies, which aren't related to lily bulbs, are perennials which don't have to be watered frequently in the dry months. Furthermore, they may be planted in spring or fall. Most perennials blossom soon after nearly all bulbs stop flowering, then they continue through the middle of summer. However, there are several perennials that blossom later or keep on blossoming until fall.
If you would like brightly colored blossoms from late spring to early summer, be sure to plant Asiatic lily bulbs. Foxglove and feathery astilbe blooms will certainly perk up the shady areas in your garden. As the season makes its transition from spring to summer, your garden will boast of lilac, coneflower, peony, and iris flowers. Note that these plants need almost no maintenance.
From mid to late summer, the flowers by the oriental lily bulbs grab the limelight from the other blossoms in the flower garden. The oriental lily bulbs are extremely hardy plants requiring hardly any care except for summer water. Their blooms are large, flashy, energetic in colors, and extremely aromatic. There are other perennials which are really easy to grow: dianthus, dahlias, phlox, coreopsis, and salvia. All these will blossom throughout the summer.
As the season transitions from summer to fall, your flower garden needn't fade. You could expect your black-eyed susan, phlox, coneflower, and dianthus to continue putting out flowers profusely until first frost. There are iris and daylily varieties that re-bloom during the fall. Some crocus flower in the fall as well. And if you have chrysanthemums in your flower garden, you could expect them to put on a show until after the majority of flowers are done putting out flowers.
Once the chilly winter months set in, depending on your location, your flowers might have to go on hiatus for a little while. However, if you reside in a milder climate, you can expect cool season flowers such as cyclamen, lenten rose, and violets to bloom throughout the winter months. In extremely cold parts, your flower garden may still have a bit of color if you have some winter berry bearing shrubs and evergreens.
All the perennials and bulbs mentioned on this page are low maintenance. As a rule, nearly all bulbs as well as some perennials do not require summer water. Later blooming flowers, along with those that stay green during the summer (which include a few bulbs and most perennials), need to be watered on occasion in the dry months. You should check the growing requirements of plants prior to purchasing them. Be sure that the flowers you select will survive in your climate zone. You can look ahead to an entire year of flowers in your flower garden.
Selecting a few fresh new herbs from the herb garden will add a little bit more taste to those home grown fruit and vegetables. In case you have never tried hydroponic gardening yet, let me suggest that you give it a try, you will end up impressed by the results.
Are Phlox's compatible with vegetables?
and if so which ones (please give a source). We have a garden at my school and my teacher wants us to have a plant and a vegetable that is compatible with the plant and mine is phlox flower. i have looked everywhere and can't find a compatible vegetable.... HeLp!!!!!
I have not heard of using phlox in "companion plantings". Most companion planting is done so that a flower or herb that repels certain pests is planted with a vegetable that falls victim to the pest. You didn't say which variety of phlox you have. Phlox plants come in many of sizes - from 6 inch creeping phlox all the way to 5 foot tall. The 5 foot variety is the most common so I'm assuming you have that variety. Phlox attracts butterflies and moths. Phlox likes full sun best but will grow in partial shade. So you need a vegetable that grows best in full sun and can grow in partial shade. You'll also want a vegetable that doesn't have caterpillar predators (as you probably learned in science class, moths and butterflies pupate from caterpillars). So you don't want to plant any of the cabbage family veggies like cabbage and broccoli because several moths lay eggs in them. A good veggie would be the bush variety of burgandy beans. They grow nicely in full sun and part shade, get only about 1-1 1/2 feet tall and have nice dark green leaves. You would plant the beans on the sun side of the phlox so they will get lots of sunshine plus they will hide the ugly lower stems of the tall phlox. Not many bugs and insects like burgandy beans. The bean is a pretty burgandy color so they are easy to see in the green foliage at harvest time. When you cook the beans they turn green lust like regular green beans. I grow them and home can them every year. Most seed racks at the stores have the burgandy beans. Make sure you get the bush variety and not the pole (vining) variety. Another compatible veggie would be any of the pepper plants.
Good luck on your project.
Freeze Proof Cool Season Flowers (features)
Some years I have sworn all my fall through winter flowers were going to be
pansies. Actually anything in the Viola genus would be fine including what
many call the Johnny-jump-ups. Actually, I believe these later members give
the best color displays. They product lots of blooms and seem to be able to
take the heat [...]
