When should I prune Japanese maple Bloodgood in zone 5?

This past summer, I planted a Japanese maple (Bloodgood) in my hard. The tree is already about 5-1/2' tall and it's done well throughout the summer. Now that the leaves are off though, I can see where it needs some pruning due to cross branches and some slight damage from a wind storm. When should I do this? Also, should I wrap it for the winter? I live in Chicago and sometimes our winters get brutally cold, but sometimes they don't. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the answers! How do I start new trees from the cut branches?

Japanese maples are just as hardy as regular maples so keep that in mind. Prune in the fall two weeks after the first frost all the way until before the trees start to actively bud. If you're worried about the extreme cold you can add extra mulch to insulate the roots. The top of the tree can take care of itself.

If you have damaged limbs remove them right away because they will not come back and they are taking nutrition away from the rest of the tree. One reason why you don't trim in the summer is because insects will enter the fresh wounds and kill the tree from the inside. If you cut a limb with a caliber bigger than .25 of an inch you may want to consider using tree wound dressing, a tar that covers up the cuts.

The sap goes back into the root system during fall. It takes about two weeks after the first frost. Absolutely don't prune in the summer or early fall unless you are going to use a tree sealant.
