A Few Pros And Cons Of Growing Your Own Fruits And Vegetables
It takes quite a bit of manual labor to prepare a new garden plot. Since having a garden has become so popular lately, you may want to become aware of some things that may occur at the beginning of this process of making a brand new garden.
There is a good and bad way to break up the soil, especially if it has never been used as a place to grow food before. Digging it up with a spade is one way but it is the hardest. The fastest is the tiller, but equally as hard on your body, especially creating neck pain from holding the darn thing back. It can take off like a wild animal if you're not careful.
That tiller is actually a good piece of equipment to have around. The whole concept is to break up the ground and make a smooth bed to plant seeds and plants into. Rocks and dirt clods have no business being in there. Some vegetables even like early planting to take advantage of the cooler weather, which they prefer. Potatoes and peas are two of those. They seem to go together, providing young taters to mix with creamed peas, as some folks like to do. The rest of that root veggie can grow to maturity.
The packet of seed that holds all those potential vegetables will tell you on the back how deep to plant them and how far apart to space them. Sowing thickly will ensure a good crop, and you can thin them to proper distance at a little later time.
Lately, there has been seen a new and easy way to grow some of your vegetables, such as tomatoes. Obtain a unique bag of soil that allows one to insert the plant into the bottom or side of the soil mixture and hang it upside down from a beam in, perhaps, your patio. Water it thoroughly and stand back. No more back-breaking tilling and hoeing to keep down the weeds.
To be sure the soil in your growing patch remains loose and pliable, ensuring good root penetration, avoid walking on it. One method of doing this is to build a planting area approximately eight feet square. This makes it possible to reach all parts without entering it and packing down the growing medium.
When female folks are the main ones to be tending the garden, it may do well for the male half of the couple to keep her happy. A small reward of garden helps, like special garden implements or gloves may be appreciated by her. For after hours, when the work is done, she may like to wear such things as a crystal necklace or birthstone ring, given to her in thanks for her hard work. Both of you will benefit from both the little gifts and the produce from the garden.
Does anyone know anything about lettuce?
We planted Lettuce in our garden this year, not head, but leaf lettuce. Does anyone know how to tell when it is ready to be cut? Do I cut it at the stalk or just cut the leaves off? Also, after I let it rinse, should I refridgerate wet or let it dry? Serious answers only please, I need help!
The nice thing about leaf lettuce, and mesclun, is that you can give it a "hair cut" and it'll keep coming back. It depends on what you like...I like to cut it when I'll get about 4-5" of leaf when I cut it back. (I usually leave a couple of inches so it'll re-grow).
I always wash it off outside, and then pat it dry when I get in the house. I make up a salad in a ceramic bowl...then cover it with a damp paper towel and refrigerate it. It lasts a couple of days if you remember to re-dampen the paper towel....depending on where you live. Just don't put it where the refrigerator is the coldest or it'll freeze it...not good.
